About the Program

Negotiation is a learned skill, not a talent

The ability to logically defend arguments and reach mutually beneficial agreements are the two main pillars of successful communication in the modern era. At Shanilu Academy, the Debate and Negotiation Techniques course is designed to train critical thinking sharpness and elegant rhetorical skills. We believe that every conflict or difference of opinion is an opportunity to demonstrate leadership quality through structured communication.

This program is not only intended for aspiring politicians or lawyers, but for anyone who wants to have a competitive advantage in business negotiations or public discussions in Indonesia. Through disciplined and repetitive practice, participants learn that composure under pressure, precision in diction, and the ability to read an opponent are skills that can be honed by anyone willing to practice them with the right methods.

Module 01

Foundations of Critical Thinking in Debate

Quality debate begins with the ability to dissect premises and draw valid conclusions without getting trapped in momentary emotions. In this session, participants are taught how to identify relevant data and build an argument structure that is difficult for an opponent to break down.

We emphasize the use of empirical evidence and coherent logic as the main weapons in every formal or informal debate. With consistent practice, participants will learn not just to speak, but to give weight to every sentence spoken.

A.

Identify hidden premises in an opponent's argument and evaluate their validity before responding.

B.

Collection and verification of relevant empirical data before building an argumentative position.

C.

Practice structuring arguments in stages: claim, evidence, reasoning, and conclusion.

Module 02

Recognizing and Avoiding Logical Fallacies

One common weakness in communication is the use of logical fallacies that are often unconscious but damage a speaker's credibility. We equip participants with the knowledge to recognize strategies such asad hominem, straw man, tocircular reasoningso they are not easily manipulated by an opponent.

Besides recognizing them, participants are also trained to respond to these logical fallacies calmly and remain focused on the substance of the issue. This ability is crucial for a moderator or presenter who must keep the quality of the discussion on the right track.

Types of Logical Fallacies Studied
  • 01
    Ad Hominem
Attacking the opponent's character, not their argument
  • 02
    Straw Man
Distorting an opponent's argument to make it easy to attack
  • 03
    Circular Reasoning
A conclusion assumed to be true in its own premise
  • 04
    False Dilemma
Forcing only two choices when other alternatives exist
Module 03

Win-Win Negotiation Strategy

Successful negotiation is not about defeating the other party, but about finding common ground where both sides feel their needs are met. We teach the Harvard negotiation model, which focuses on interests rather than just rigid bargaining positions.

Participants will learn how to build empathy with their negotiation counterparts to understand their hidden motivations, which are often the key to unlocking a deal. This strategy is highly applicable in the media business world, from contract negotiations to content dispute resolution.

Step 1
Separate the people from the problem
Step 2
Focus on interests, not positions
Step 3
Seek mutually beneficial options
Module 04

Emotional Management Under Pressure

Debate or negotiation situations often trigger high stress that can interfere with speaking ability and rational decision-making. Our program includes instant relaxation techniques and ways to manage adrenaline spikes so that participants remain calm and authoritative in front of the public.

We teach how to remain polite yet firm, as well as how to maintain a tone of voice that does not sound defensive or aggressive. Calmness is one of the most influential forms of communication power in winning over an audience's opinion.

Module 05

Real Case Simulations in Indonesia

To ensure deep understanding, we use case studies from social, economic, and political dynamics occurring in Indonesia as practice material. Participants will be divided into groups to simulate media employment contract negotiations or debates on hot-button public policy issues.

These simulations are conducted with strict time limits and the presence of a third party acting as a mediator or media. This practical experience helps participants apply theory to complex real-world situations.

Format A
Media Contract Negotiation

Simulation of employment contract bargaining between a presenter, management, and a television station.

Format B
Public Policy Debate

Formal debate on current issues with a moderator and strict time limits.

Format C
Dispute Resolution

Mediation of content or editorial conflicts with a third party as a neutral mediator.

Module 06

Persuasion Techniques and Diction Usage

Choosing the right words can change people's perception of an issue, and that is the essence of the art of persuasion we teach. Participants will learn how to use metaphors, analogies, and evocative sentence structures to strengthen the message they wish to convey.

We also discuss the psychology behind specific words that can trigger positive responses from the interlocutor or a broad audience. By mastering diction, a negotiator or debater can steer opinion subtly without appearing to force their will.

Module 07

The Role of Body Language in Negotiation

Non-verbal communication often speaks louder than words, especially in sensitive bargaining situations. We teach how to read a counterpart's body language cues, such as eye movements, hand positions, and sitting posture, to determine their level of comfort or hesitation.

Participants are also trained to use their own body language to project confidence and openness in discussions. Harmonizing what is said with what the body shows is the key to the integrity of a professional communicator.

Module 08

Active Listening Techniques

A good debater or negotiator is an extraordinary listener, because the most valuable information is often obtained while the other party is speaking. We train participants to listen not only to the words spoken but also to the meaning implied behind them.

By listening actively, you can ask sharp clarifying questions and provide targeted responses. This ability also helps in building good long-term relationships with business partners or sources.

What is Trained
  • Distinguishing what is said from what is meant
  • Asking clarifying questions that dig deeper
  • Identifying information gaps that are intentionally or unintentionally hidden
Module 09

Ethics in Debating and Negotiating

Integrity is a value that must not be sacrificed to win an argument or a unilateral deal. Shanilu Academy emphasizes the importance of honesty, respect for opponents, and adherence to mutually agreed-upon rules.

We teach that victories achieved through unethical means will only damage long-term reputation and close off future cooperation opportunities. This professional ethics is what distinguishes a manipulator from an authoritative and respected communicator.

Module 10

Personal Assessment and Feedback

Each participant will receive an in-depth assessment based on their performance during the debate and negotiation simulations held at the end of the course. Instructors will provide specific notes regarding argument structure, response accuracy, and micro-aspects of message delivery.

This feedback is invaluable for participants to know which areas still require further independent improvement. We believe that honest evaluation is the first step toward self-transformation into a formidable public speaker.

Assessment Aspects
  • Argument structure
  • Response accuracy
  • Diction quality
  • Body language
  • Emotional management
