Why Interviewing

Interviewing is an art, not just a Q&A session.

Becoming an interviewer is a skill that combines psychology, journalism, and interpersonal communication techniques. Shanilu Academy provides a specialized training program for those aspiring to become professional talk show hosts, field journalists, or podcasters.

Our focus is on developing the ability to create conversations that flow while maintaining a clear purpose to obtain information relevant to the audience. Through a structured curriculum, participants learn how to turn rigid Q&A sessions into meaningful dialogues that captivate viewers.

This course centers on concrete methodology: questioning techniques, observation, ethics, and cross-platform adaptation. There are no promises of instant success — only a framework that can be trained and measured.

Chapter 01

Pre-Interview Preparation and Research

The key to a successful interview lies in the depth of research before the meeting begins. We teach participants how to gather background information on the interviewee, understand the context of the issues to be discussed, and construct a framework of substantive questions.

Without strong research, an interviewer only asks surface-level questions that are often already known to the public. In-depth research gives the interviewer confidence and shows respect to the interviewee for the time they have provided.

  • Techniques for mapping interviewee profiles from public sources and archives
  • Identifying issue angles not yet explored by the media
  • Drafting a framework of priority and backup questions
Chapter 02

Constructing Effective Questions

In this course, we dissect the difference between open and closed questions, and when is the right time to use each type. Participants are trained to avoid questions that trigger only "yes" or "no" answers, and instead ask questions that encourage the interviewee to tell more.

We also teach techniques for constructing tiered questions, starting from general ones to more specific and sensitive ones gradually. This skill ensures the flow of the interview is maintained and the information goal is achieved naturally.

Practical Example

Instead of asking "Do you agree with this policy?", participants are trained to ask "How do you see the impact of this policy on your community?" — a question that opens space for a story.

Chapter 03

The Art of Listening and Observation

A bad interviewer is one who is too focused on their notes that they forget to listen to the interviewee's answers. We emphasize the importance of full presence (mindfulness) during the interview process so the interviewer can capture key points to ask as follow-up questions.

Besides listening, participants are taught to observe the interviewee's emotional reactions to know whether a topic needs to be explored further or should be shifted immediately. Sharp observation helps the interviewer maintain the interviewee's comfort while obtaining honest information.

Active listening exercise: participants record themselves leading a simulation conversation, then review how many follow-up questions emerged from the interviewee's answers — not from the prepared list.

Handling Difficult Interviewees

Every interviewer will inevitably face interviewees who are reluctant to speak, overly dominant, or even aggressive in their answers. This module provides practical strategies for ice-breaking and techniques for redirecting the conversation if the interviewee starts rambling.

We also discuss how to remain calm and professional when dealing with interviewees who attempt personal attacks or avoid crucial questions. Mental readiness in facing various personality types is a hallmark of experienced media professionals.

Reluctant to Speak

Techniques for opening conversations with contextual questions relevant to the interviewee's world.

Overly Dominant

How to interrupt politely and redirect to the core topic without losing a respectful tone.

Aggressive / Defensive

Strategies for staying calm, de-escalating, and continuing to demand answers to valid questions.

Chapter 05

Interview Ethics and Privacy

Respecting the rights of interviewees and maintaining ethical boundaries is a top priority taught at Shanilu Academy. Participants will learn about the concept of "off the record," how to obtain informed consent, and how to maintain the integrity of the data obtained.

We emphasize that the purpose of an interview is for public interest or education, not for character assassination or excessive emotional exploitation. A strong understanding of ethics will build an interviewer's reputation as someone who can be trusted by interviewees from all walks of life.

  • The concept of "off the record" and the limits of its use
  • Informed consent procedures before recording
  • Data integrity: not cutting quotes in a way that changes the meaning
Chapter 06

Interview Techniques Across Platforms

The way to conduct an interview for a national television station is certainly different from the style used for an indie podcast or a social media live stream. We provide insights on adapting communication styles according to the medium used, including duration, language usage, and level of formality.

Participants will learn how to maintain stable energy in front of a studio camera or through the small screen of a phone during an Instagram live session. This flexibility is crucial in the current era of media convergence, where an interviewer must be ready to work in various digital formats.

Mastering Intonation and Vocals

Voice is the primary tool for an interviewer to set the mood of a conversation, whether it is serious, warm, or provocative. We provide vocal exercises to improve voice clarity and how to manage breathing so as not to sound rushed when asking questions.

Participants are also taught how to use silence as a technique to place emphasis on an issue or provide space for the interviewee to think. A calm and authoritative voice will make the interviewee feel more comfortable and the audience will find it easier to absorb the information conveyed.

Breathing Exercises

Diaphragmatic breathing techniques to maintain voice stability during long sessions.

The Power of Silence

The use of silence as an instrument for emphasis and reflection space.

Articulation

Exercises for pronunciation clarity for optimal audience understanding.

Modulation

Tone variation to distinguish serious questions from light ones.

Chapter 08

Deep Talk Interview Simulation

As part of field practice, participants will conduct interview simulations with various scenarios, ranging from public figure profile interviews to short investigative interviews. This session will be recorded so that participants can review their performance and receive detailed corrections from the instructor.

This recording process is highly effective for realizing bad habits that might go unnoticed, such as excessive hand gestures or the repetition of certain words. The feedback provided is focused on improving the quality of interaction and the sharpness of the interview content.

Scenario A Public figure profile interview with a 15-minute duration limit
Scenario B Short investigative interview with a reluctant interviewee
Scenario C 45-minute podcast deep talk session on a sensitive topic

Chapter 09

Building Rapport Quickly

Building trust in a short time is key to getting an interviewee to open up to an interviewer they may have just met. We teach practical psychological techniques to build initial closeness through light conversation and body language alignment (mirroring).

Participants will learn how to show sincerity and genuine interest in the topic being discussed, which will automatically make the interviewee more relaxed. A good relationship at the beginning of the session is crucial for the success of information gathering throughout the rest of the interview.

Technique 01 Mirroring

Alignment of posture and speech rhythm to build subconscious closeness.

Technique 02 Directed Small Talk

Relevant opening conversations to break initial tension.

Technique 03 Active Validation

Small actions that show you are listening and valuing the answers.

Chapter 10

Analyzing Interview Results

After the interview is finished, a professional's task is not over; they must be able to evaluate whether the interview's goals have been achieved. We teach how to review key points from the interview results to be used as material for news, articles, or social media content.

Participants are trained to extract the strongest quotes and craft an honest narrative based on facts revealed during the Q&A session. This analytical ability ensures that the interview results do not just stop as a conversation, but become a piece of information useful to the public.
